  3. Requirements
  4. You need at least
  5. - a Macintosh 512KE with System 6
  6. - a minimum of 550 of application RAM
  7. - a terminal application ("Z-Term" recommended)
  8. - a depack application ("ZipIt" recommended)
  9. Using Alice without a hard disk may damage your sense of humor. Alice is 32-bit clean, supports 32-Bit QuickDraw and runs also on PowerMacintosh systems.

  14. Just copy the "Alice" application onto your hard disk - that's all! Existing "WRITMAPS.DAT" and "READMAPS.DAT" files from from previous versions of Alice are no longer needed and can be deleted.

  17. Using a mail paket

  19. In Alice concept you create for each mailbox a "Box". At the time of creation you specify which message format you want to use.

  21. If you want to use BlueWave, QWK or XRS formats, so let "TeachText" print the "Step-by-Step" figures within the "Figures" folder.
  22. Informations about the installation of Fidonet or ZERBERUS boxes are in "T2" and "Natascha" manuals.

  24. If possible, always use "ZipIt" for depacking pakets. Alice can launch "ZipIt", let the files extract and then automatically quit "ZipIt". At this time Alice does not support any other depacker like this.
  25. "PowerUsers" may write their own AppleScripts which interact with other depacker and compile the script as an application. This application must be used in Alice as the depacker".

  28. The "BBS Systems" Window
  29. The window "BBS Systems" is modeled after the Finder. To open a mailbox, you just double-click on its icon - and you can assign different icons to the different mailboxes and move them around.

  39. Creating a New Mailbox or Changing Parameters
  40. Use the commands "Add New Box" or "Change Parameters" from the menu "BBS Systems". If you are creating a new mailbox, you can choose which type you would like to create, otherwise you will immediately see the parameter dialog box. See the descriptions of the various mailbox types later in this chapter for details.

  43. Opening a BBS
  44. Select the BBS in the window "BBS Systems" and choose "Open" from the File menu - or just double-click on the BBS.
  45. Choosing "Start" from menu "BBS Systems" you can launch a terminal application (or whatever you specified as "Call Up" parameters within the box setup). If the application quits Alice goes on as if you opend the box.

  48. Deleting a Mailbox
  49. Select the mailbox you would like to delete and choose "Clear" from the Edit menu, then confirm the deletion in the dialog box.
